After a series of videos emerged of individuals allegedly rejoicing in the Hamas attack on Israel, police patrols across London have been increased. According to immigration minister Robert Jenrick, who urged the Met Police to intervene, people were “glorifying the terrorist activities of Hamas”. The Met Police has promised a visible presence to “reassure communities” and is taking the matter seriously.
On Saturday, Palestinian militants carried out a major offensive on Israel from Gaza, leading to the sharing of videos on social media depicting the waving of Palestinian flags, beeping car horns and clapping. Mr Jenrick claimed that “there is no place for this in the UK” and that it needs to be addressed urgently.
In response to the increased incidents, the Scotland Yard issued a statement, noting that it is aware of the ongoing conflict in relation to Israel and Gaza. The statement also reads that “the Met has increased policing patrols across parts of London in order to provide a visible presence and reassurance to our communities.” It further urges anyone who feels threatened or concerned about their safety to contact the police.
Londoners are being advised to keep an eye out for any potential disturbances, and anyone who feels unsafe is being encouraged to report it immediately. The Met has also said it will strike an appropriate policing plan to “balance the right to protest against any disruption to Londoners.
