A minibus carrying football players from Roman Glass FC overturned after being struck by a car on the A38 near Thornbury, Gloucestershire last Friday night. The team was returning home from a Hellenic League Premier Division match they had won at Longlevens in Gloucester. Three passengers, including assistant manager Tony Beecham and players Louis Ward and Shea Mannings, suffered serious injuries and were taken to Southmead Hospital. However, they were all discharged the next day and are expected to make a full recovery.
Roger Hudd, the club’s chairman, hailed the minibus driver as a hero and said he saved lives by taking evasive action to avoid a car coming at speed and travelling on the wrong side of the road. According to the police, the accident involved four vehicles, including two stolen Mitsubishi Outlanders. One person was arrested in connection with the incident, and two others who left the scene before the police arrived are still at large.
Although several other passengers received only minor bruises and cuts, Mr. Hudd said the club would ask for their next two games to be postponed, as they needed time to deal with the trauma caused by the incident. Mr. Mannings described it as a very scary night.
