The Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) has decided to review the convictions of Michael Stone for the murders of Lin Russell and her daughter Megan. This comes after a previous review three months ago dismissed the case being sent to the Court of Appeal. Stone is currently serving three life sentences for the crimes.
The CCRC’s statement says that “previous reviews found no credible evidence or argument that raised a real possibility of the convictions being quashed, these conclusions are not affected by the new review.” However, after Stone’s representatives made a new application to scrutinize the evidence again, CCRC agreed to another review.
The case came to light after serial killer, Levi Bellfield, whose victims include schoolgirl Milly Dowler, admitted to the murders of Lin and Megan Russell. Although he later retracted the statement, in April of this year, Stone’s lawyers claimed that Bellfield had written and signed a fresh confession.
