Gripper, a producer and selector, has shared his latest record under his alias, Tambores En Benirras. The album, ‘Ondas Horizontales’, was released through NuNorthern Soul and reflects Gripper’s personal experience with his visual impairment. Following the release of his ‘Orbe Dotado’ album, Gripper lost more of his sight and became registered as blind. This influenced his curation of ‘Ondas Horizontales’, which takes a different approach than his previous release in 2021. The LP draws inspiration from his ibiza surroundings and peers’ sets, producing a soulful and calming depth of sound.
Regarding the LP, Gripper stated, “It involved rethinking the music making process I was used to and taking a step back into a more reflective way of working and expressing my emotions.” While writing most of the tracks in solitude while in Ibiza last year, his circumstances influenced ‘Ondas Horizontales’, resulting in a deeper and more contemplative album. The LP marries Balearic, ambient, classical, and leftfield influences against the trademark progressive soundscapes and musicality of the earlier Tambores LP.
Phil Cooper, the labelhead, spoke on his decision to pursue this project with Gripper once again. After releasing ‘Orbe Dotado,’ which delves into a dark and somber sound, Phil wanted something lighter and positive for their post-pandemic consumer. After it regressed, Phil saw the opportunity for a visually and audio pleasing experience with ‘Ondas Horizontales.’
