Sophie Pollard, director of MyHaus Brighton, expressed her shock at having such an incident occur close to her business. Another shop owner, Hakan Toklu, who manages Grocer and Grain on Surrey Street, said he had been livid in the city for 23 years and had never witnessed anything like this.
Local MP Caroline Lucas has shared her sympathies on social media following the incident. Peter Kyle, MP for Hove and Portslade, also posted that he was heartbroken and angry at the loss of life. He further added that the whole city has been shocked and worried by the incident, and Sussex Police would carry out a rigorous investigation.
Detective Superintendent Andy Wolstenholme has promised an increased police presence in the area for the time being. He has urged anyone who witnessed the incident or saw a man dressed in black leaving the area to come forward with information.
