Watch: GB athlete reflects on 'scary' race collapse

Kieran Lindars, a GB triathlete, has spoken about his experience of overheating during the Challenge Almere-Amsterdam event on 9 September. Lindars, who was defending his title in the eight-hour race, began to struggle with the hot weather as he approached the finish line. Despite stumbling and collapsing, he managed to finish second and posted video of his efforts to stay upright on Instagram. The post has been viewed over 14 million times.

Lindars described the experience as “really scary” and admitted that he had gone “in and out of consciousness”. He thanked the medical team who treated him and advised others attempting strenuous exercise to pay attention to their body and avoid pushing themselves too hard. “I think it was the first time I’d found my limits,” he said. “And that was really scary.”

A spokesperson for the race praised Lindars’s athleticism and confirmed that he was “OK only 30 minutes after the finish”. Runners in the race had been warned to take precautions against the hot weather, which had been forecast in advance.

Lindars’s case highlights the importance of exercising safely in hot weather. As temperatures rise, athletes should be careful to stay hydrated, wear breathable clothing and start exercising gently before ramping up the intensity. Avoiding the hottest part of the day and taking breaks in the shade can also help prevent overheating. By taking sensible precautions, athletes can ensure they stay safe in even the most challenging conditions
