Jaswant Singh Chail: Man who took crossbow to 'kill Queen' jailed

Jaswant Singh Chail has been sentenced to nine years in jail for treason after he was found to have arrived at Windsor Castle with a crossbow with the intention of assassinating the Queen. Chail was arrested on Christmas Day in the grounds of the castle whilst the late monarch was in residence. According to the Old Bailey, Chail’s homicidal thoughts were the result of inspiration from Star Wars storylines and assistance from his AI chatbot “girlfriend” Sarai. The hybrid order under the Mental Health Act means that he will remain in a psychiatric hospital for now but will be transferred to custody when he has received the appropriate treatment. Chail is the first person in the UK to be convicted of treason since 1981.

During a live TV broadcast, the judge, Mr. Justice Hilliard, revealed that Chail did not plan on simply harming or alarming the sovereign, but to kill her. Judge Hilliard emphasised that Chail’s intention to kill made the offence “as serious as it could be”. The convicted
