Cardiff Half Marathon: Runners get engaged near finish line

When Felix Harkness, 39, reached the finishing line of the Cardiff Half Marathon, he surprised his partner Anna Bearne by proposing to her in front of thousands of people. The couple crossed the finishing line of the 13.1-mile race in one hour and 43 minutes, and had originally hoped to beat their personal bests. This race was the couple’s third over this distance. It is reported that the couple “caught the running bug” just over a year ago and have been training together ever since.

Mr Harkness took his partner, Anna Bearne, completely by surprise when he suddenly proposed within metres of the finish line. Anna expressed that despite numerous training sessions together, she had “absolutely no clue” what was going to happen. When Mr Harkness first crossed the line, Anna became frustrated with his performance that day, saying “there’s just no point in finishing” because Felix was finding it very difficult to keep up. However, in the end, he persevered, refusing to give up on the race and made the wonderful decision to turn the race into a proposal opportunity.

Wearing his race kit, Mr Harkness pretended to pull a muscle before he went down on the ground to retrieve the engagement ring from his pocket and propose to his partner. Miss Bearne, originally from Bristol, was “still in shock” and “so chuffed” with the proposal. The couple has booked another half-marathon in two weeks in hopes of beating their previous time since they couldn’t make their personal best this time.

In addition to planning for the next half marathon, the couple is reportedly thrilled to be planning their wedding. They have three children who are equally as excited for their upcoming nuptials as they are. When asked about the even, Miss Bearne said “I cannot believe he did it there and then”, however, for the family it will be the perfect backstory for a once-in-a-lifetime event, that they will never forget
