The leader of the Welsh Conservatives, Andrew RT Davies, has criticised the Welsh government for implementing a “blanket” 20mph speed limit across the country, calling it an “extreme ideology.” Speaking at his party’s conference in Manchester, Davies accused the Welsh Labour government of ignoring the 450,000 individuals who signed a petition against the new speed limit. The Welsh government defended its action, noting that it was not a “blanket restriction” as many roads remained unchanged.
The speed limit was cut from 30mph to 20mph as the default residential limit in the country two weeks ago, with the aim of saving lives and making communities safer. Davies claimed that his party offers a “common sense” approach, which contrasts with the “extreme ideology” of the Welsh government. The prime minister echoed Davies’ criticism, calling the restrictions “blanket.” However, a spokesperson for the Welsh government said the term was “profoundly disappointing” and argued that the majority of speed limits in Wales had remained unchanged.
The Welsh Secretary, David TC Davies, also addressed the conference, calling for an inquiry into the Betsi Cadwaladr health board. The Welsh government argued that a new leadership team is in place and should be supported, rather than diverting resources and attention towards an inquiry
