In a world where people are bombarded with conflicting news headlines and misinformation on a daily basis, news literacy has become a vital life skill. Founder of the News Literacy Lab, Jodie Jackson, emphasizes that we must equip ourselves with the necessary tools to navigate the complex and often polluted information landscape. Jackson has launched an education program for young people between the ages of 14 and 18. The objective is to go beyond just spotting fake news, and champion the idea that students should understand the different factors that contribute to widespread misinformation and skewed perceptions of the world.

The project recognizes solutions journalism as a potent antidote against the media’s negativity bias. The new education program emphasises the importance of viewing major world problems through a lens that is not ONLY negative. It is also essential to highlight positive actions that are being taken to address the issues. Jackson has launched the curriculum rooted in principles of positive psychology and a growth mindset to teach young people about empathy, resilience and hope in problem-solving.

Project’s first findings published in a report called “Navigating News, Nurturing Hope,” underscores the importance of focusing on solutions. Jackson states that “We must develop the necessary skills to stand guard at the doors of our own minds. Our individual wellbeing – and the wellbeing of the world – depends on it.”

The News Literacy Lab does not only teach young people how to spot and stop fake news, but it is also dedicated to helping them understand the different factors that lead to misinformation and an ill-informed worldview. With many young people using social media from the age of eight, there is growing concern about how they navigate the world of information. In response, Jackson’s News Literacy Lab project provides a significant solution to the issue
