Cewe, a photo printing firm, has crowned Indonesian photographer Ariani Dikye the winner of its photography competition, themed ‘our world is beautiful.’ The winning photo depicted a woman slamming down a winning card in a traditional Indonesian teahouse game of dominoes, capturing the joy that comes from community gatherings in a moment. The winning image beat over half a million other entries, including shots of exploding volcanoes and New York City skyscrapers. Swiss artist, filmmaker, and Vogue photographer Michel Comte chaired the jury.
In addition to applauding photographers worldwide, the Cewe photo competition raises money, with ten cents from every photo submitted going to charity. This year’s competition raised €50,962, which will be given to the EduCare Baidoa project in Somalia, run by non-profit SOS Children’s Villages. The project, which is remodeling schools, teaching educators, and ensuring 2,000 children receive a good education, will benefit from the funds raised. It follows decades of civil war in Somalia that have left more than three million children without access to schooling.
The photography competition attracted submissions from across the globe. Cewe announced the winners in 10 categories, and all runners-up and finalists’ photos can be found on its website. Among the notable shots were an image depicting chimpanzee hands in Uganda’s Kibale Forest, the architecture and technology group winner capturing a New York City crowd at Summit One Vanderbilt, and the nature group winner’s image of the Aialik Glacier on a boat tour in Alaska.
Overall, the photographs displayed the beauty of our planet and highlighted the precious moments captured around the world daily
