A Metropolitan Police officer, currently known as NX121, has been charged with the murder of Chris Kaba, a drill rapper who was shot and killed in London in September 2022. The incident occurred when Kaba was followed by two police officers and boxed in down a residential street in South London’s Streatham Hill after the activation of an automatic number plate recognition camera. A police weapon was then fired, killing Kaba.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct had previously referred a file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) following a homicide investigation. The CPS reviewed the evidence and announced the murder charge against NX121. The officer is set to appear before Westminster Magistrates Court today.
During the incident, police had attempted to stop Kaba believing that the car he was driving was linked to a firearms incident days before. A follow-up inquest conducted in the aftermath found that Kaba was not a suspect.
Since this announcement, the family of Chris Kaba has issued a statement expressing hope that justice will be served. “We welcome this charging decision, which could not have come too soon,” the statement said. “Now we await the trial of the firearms officer without delay and hope and pray that justice will be served.
