Hopes for closure in river search for missing woman

A search for Hazel Nairn, a woman who disappeared during severe flooding in Aberdeenshire last year, is set to take place in the River Don this weekend. Hazel was 71 years old when she went missing in November; her body was not found despite extensive searches. Beneath the Surface, a voluntary underwater sonar search and recovery dive team, will work with local divers to search the river.

Hazel’s daughter, Anneka, struggled with the fact that her mother’s body had not been found. “It is very hard…knowing she is most likely still in the river caught somewhere – that is the hardest part,” she said. “What she would have gone through that day is horrific enough but the fact she was never found and laid to rest or ashes scattered somewhere special is what eats away at you.”

Jane Green, who volunteered with Hazel in a thrift shop in Monymusk, was one of the last to see her. She recalled the day with great sadness, saying, “The day turned upside down so quickly. We knew that there was flooding down at the river and people in the village were saying in all the years they had been here they had never seen it so bad.”

Hazel’s dog was found in the days after she disappeared. A statement from Beneath the Surface said that her body may be caught somewhere in the river, but this has yet to be confirmed
