Earlier this month, a herd of sheep invaded a medicinal cannabis greenhouse in Thessaly, Greece, and consumed over 100kg of crops due to a food shortage caused by extreme flooding from Storm Daniel. The flooding, which killed 17 people and over 100,000 animals, still affects the plains today, with much of the grass used for feeding livestock now decayed. This led the desperate herd of sheep to find alternative food sources in the greenhouse.
The flock’s consumption of the medicinal cannabis has caused a stir with local farmers, as the greenhouses are used to produce valuable crops for pharmaceutical export. Greece legalized cannabis for medicinal purposes in 2017 and recently opened the largest medicinal cannabis facility in Europe, which includes 21,000 square meters of greenhouses and fully equipped research and development departments.
These events have plagued the farmers. They had already lost the majority of their crops due to a heatwave and flooding, which also created decayed grass that led the sheep to invade the greenhouse. The owner of the greenhouse was left conflicted, stating to Newspaper.gr that he didn’t know whether to laugh or cry at the situation.
As Greece battles the aftermath of the storm, it is hoped that measures will be put into place to prevent similar situations from arising in the future. Despite this incident, the country’s position as a leading pharmaceutical exporter remains cemented by its cannabis production facilities
