Following a crash involving the Flying Scotsman locomotive and the Royal Scotsman train, safety inspections will be carried out on the Flying Scotsman. The collision, which occurred at Aviemore in the Highlands, resulted in two people being treated in hospital for minor injuries. The locomotive was scheduled to run passenger trips over the weekend, but was withdrawn ahead of Monday’s full safety inspection. Excursion operators, Belmond, stated that a “shunting incident” occurred whilst Flying Scotsman was being coupled with Royal Scotsman carriages, which were stationary on the Strathspey Railway Line.
Strathspey Steam Railway said, “The Flying Scotsman locomotive will not haul any trains this weekend.” Engineers are on site to conduct detailed damage assessments, with a full investigation underway. Several individuals were assessed at the scene but did not require treatment. Police Scotland issued a statement indicating that inquiries were ongoing, and British Transport Police confirmed that they are working with them to establish the full circumstances of the crash.
The newly-restored steam locomotive, which was built in Doncaster in 1923, was unveiled last year to celebrate its centenary. The 97-tonne locomotive, owned by the National Railway Museum in York, is the first in the UK to officially reach 100mph and the first-ever service to run non-stop from London to Edinburgh. As part of its centenary year, the locomotive is visiting railway stations around the UK and has spent time at the National Railway Museum. Riley & Son (E) Ltd, based in Heywood, Greater Manchester, maintain Flying Scotsman.
Belmond reported that “all passengers on board at the time of the incident are safe and have been offered alternative travel arrangements.” Gratitude was extended to the crew and emergency services for their swift reactions in prioritising the safety and well-being of passengers. Strathspey Steam Railway requested understanding amid the difficult situation as they attempt to recover safely with third parties. The Flying Scotsman locomotive will not be hauling any trains over the weekend, with further announcements expected following a full safety inspection on Monday
