The Liverpool kids who chased me down the street: Rob Bremner’s best photograph

Rob Bremner, a photographer originally from Scotland who moved to Merseyside, has reflected on his time in Liverpool during the 1980s. Bremner, who was studying documentary photography at the time, said he was drawn to the people in the north of the city. His famous photograph of a group of young people was taken in Kirkdale in March 1986, as Bremner was shooting buildings that had been knocked down. Joseph, one of the children, later became a professional boxer. Melanie, another child in the photograph, has also been recognised by individuals who have seen the shot on various websites.
Bremner’s photography received plaudits from people who recognised those in his images. According to Bremner, “everyday life wasn’t recorded much back then, particularly in deprived areas. You’d only buy a roll of film if you were going on holiday, or maybe if it was somebody’s party”. Bremner also recounted how he had a habit of only shooting one or two frames per subject, and only told subjects to “stand there and don’t smile”.
Bremner has since moved back to Scotland but has said he would love to return to Liverpool to continue his work. He is now interested in documenting children today and is more interested in the way that everything changes over time. He said: “I’d love to do a project where I photograph every person in Liverpool. It might take a few years but I reckon I could manage it”.
A Kickstarter campaign to fund Bremner’s Liverpool project is currently accepting donations until 14 September
