New club to open at Berlin’s Tegel Airport, Turbulence TXL

Turbulence TXL, a new club in Berlin, is set to open this weekend at the city’s decommissioned Tegel Airport after the venue was forced to delay its opening due to COVID-19 restrictions. The inaugural party, called “Lift Off”, will feature performances from Saraab, Mareena, Lisbird, and Philipp Johan Thimm, as well as a special DJ back-to-back from S Ruston and Zebra Katz.

The airport’s fast passage through record-keeping made it a popular destination for touring artists and DJs, leading to its closure in November 2020. In August, however, the airport hosted the sound art festival, Sonambiente Berlin TXL. Over approximately two weeks, the festival held talks, audio compositions, sound performances, and a virtual reality installation from Hsin-Chien Huang and Laurie Anderson. The nearly 1,000 loudspeaker systems in the former airport’s empty terminals resounded with work from Blixa Bargeld, Susan Philipsz, Emeka Ogboh, and other artists.

Turbulence TXL’s launch party, welcoming up to 700 guests, will be held in the former airport canteen. The space will be available for live music, workshops, and art installations, in addition to regular club nights, all part of the venue’s larger mission of “transforming the franchtkantine at Tegel Airport into a creative hub.” Participating artists including Spoare153, Anne Bengard, Max RĂ¼bensal, Honey, Paula Riquelme, and Caro Pepe have already established a unique atmosphere for the space with their installations and artworks.

Tickets are currently available for purchase for Turbulence TXL’s “Lift Off” event
