Liverpool’s Museum is set to showcase an exhibit devoted to the late comedian Sir Ken Dodd. The exhibit, named ‘Happiness!’ after Dodd’s signature song, will display various memorabilia including his colourful tickling sticks, his ventriloquist doll Dicky Mint and writings from the notebooks Dodd filled with his jokes and comedic philosophy. The exhibition will also provide an interactive “giggle map” of Dodd’s observations and experiences entertaining audiences across the UK.
Visitors will be encouraged to contribute their memories and experiences of the beloved comic, who died in 2018 at the age of 90. Moreover, the exhibit will showcase select cameo footage of Dodd telling some of his classic jokes, along with filmed reflections from fellow comedians Lee Mack, Miriam Margolyes and Ian McKellen.
Curator Karen O’Rourke promises that the exhibition will reveal the “two sides of the much-loved Doddy,” and how his “larger than life” comedic persona was a façade to his “deep thinking” and private lifestyle off stage. Select extracts from Dodd’s notebooks will be available at the exhibit but will predominantly be kept private. Dodd’s widow, Anne, frequently appeared in his shows and will loan the notebooks for the exhibit.
‘Happiness!’ opens on 9 September at the Museum of Liverpool and will run until 3 March. Tickets for the exhibit are available for purchase now
