GB News broadcaster Calvin Robinson has been suspended from the channel following his expression of support for Dan Wootton. Laurence Fox’s comments about reporter Ava Evans led to the suspension of both Fox and Wootton. Since then, Wootton and Fox have apologised, and GB News has suspended Robinson while it investigates the situation.
Robinson had posted on social media that he would only appear on Wootton’s show if Wootton was presenting it. He explained that he stood up for Wootton because he believed he was standing up for the idea of GB News. Robinson’s bosses at the channel confirmed that he had been suspended. This move marks another escalation in the controversy surrounding Fox and Wootton.
On Dan Wootton Tonight on Tuesday, Fox and Wootton were discussing Evans’ dismissal, and Fox made derogatory comments about her. Evans then spoke out about feeling scared because of the comments while Wootton apologised. Fox stuck by his remarks but subsequently released an apology statement on social media. GB News’ chief executive, Angelos Frangopoulos, said that the channel’s investigation was looking very closely at the production process of the programme.
Ofcom said that it had received over 7,300 complaints about the segment and has launched an investigation under rule 2.3 of the Broadcasting Code, which necessitates broadcasters to justify any potentially offensive material within the context.
